Step back in time to the end of the 19th century, and celebrate the holidays at Astoria’s historic Flavel House Museum, one of the best examples of Queen Anne architecture in the Northwest. The Clatsop County Historical Society decorates the mansion for a Victorian Christmas, with evergreens encircling fireplace mantels, and strung over doorways. Favorite decorations in that era included gilded or silvered nuts, and a Christmas tree decorated with fanciful paper chains and ornaments and lighted with candles.
Holiday Tea and Plum Pudding
You can enjoy the Holiday Tea from 1 pm until 4 pm on the afternoons of December 17 to December 23, and December 26 to December 30, 2016,. Tour the beautifully decorated house and refresh yourselves with a cup of tea and a dish of fresh, warm Plum (or Christmas) Pudding. The pudding originated in medieval England but did not become a tradition for Christmas dinner until the mid-1800’s. Don’t expect plums in your Victorian treat, since the word “plums” was an early term for raisins, and today the pudding can include different dried fruits!
Old-Fashioned Christmas Celebration
St. Nicholas comes to town Monday, December 19, 2016, for the Flavel House’s Christmas Celebration. Although he could choose from six of the festively decorated fireplaces in the house, you’ll probably find him sitting in the library, waiting to hear the children’s wishes. Why not celebrate the season with music, games, and stories for the children, while you enjoy sharing cookies and hot cocoa with St. Nick?
Celebrating at Astoria’s Flavel House Museum this December will take you back to the Victorian era, and what better way to enjoy the nostalgia of Christmas past then staying at Clementine’s Bed and Breakfast this holiday season? Give us a call, and let us surround you with the warmth of both Christmas past and Christmas present.
